Selecting The Right Type Of A Solar Water Heater

Enjoying a hot shower doesn’t need to come with huge power bills, with a solar water heater, you can enjoy water warmed by nature.

If you are planning on installing a solar water heater, you need to get it right with type and water quantity. Quantity is easy, most domestic solar water heater systems in Kenya are between 150 liters,200 liters, and 300 liters. The volume of the system is determined by household hot water demand, the higher the demand the bigger the system volume required.

In areas such as hotels and schools, a centralized solar hot water system is recommended.

Selecting the right type of solar water heater will require you to consider the following.

  1. The water quality: For freshwater systems, a direct system is recommended. For households served with borehole or well water, and indirect solar water system is recommended.
  2. Water pressure: For systems where water is being pumped to the water heaters, a pressurized solar water heater system is recommended. If the water flows to the system by gravity, a non-pressurized system can be used.

For many people, installation of the solar water heater comes as the final stage during construction, in the design stage, it’s recommended to do a hot water line on the plumbing system, this avoids future fixing on the plumbing lines when installing the solar water heater.
