Borehole Drilling and Solar-Powered Pump for St. Mark’s Katheka, Kitui

As part of our ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR), Betterline Water has completed a transformative project at St. Mark’s Katheka School in Kitui County, ensuring the school has a reliable and sustainable source of clean water. Our team undertook the entire process—from borehole drilling to the installation of a solar-powered borehole pump, bringing a much-needed solution to the school’s water challenges.

On-site, our CEO and Director proudly handed over the fully operational system, which will drastically improve the school’s access to water, especially in the arid region of Kitui.

Borehole Drilling: Bringing Water to Where It’s Needed

Kitui County faces significant water scarcity issues, with dry spells affecting access to this essential resource. As part of this project, Betterline Water conducted a thorough hydrogeological survey and carried out borehole drilling, tapping into groundwater to provide a reliable, clean water source. Our borehole drilling expertise ensures a steady supply of water, even in areas prone to drought.

Solar-Powered Pump: Sustainable Water Access for the Future

Once the borehole was successfully drilled, we installed a solar-powered water pump—leveraging renewable energy to make the system more cost-effective and environmentally friendly. The pump provides a constant flow of water without relying on expensive electricity or fuel, making it an ideal solution for the remote school.

Impact on St. Mark’s Katheka

Water access has been a major challenge for the learners and staff at St. Mark’s Katheka. Before this project, water shortages were common, disrupting daily school activities and placing a strain on resources. Now, with a continuous supply of water, the students can focus on their education without the added worry of water shortages. The water can also be used for sanitation, cooking, and other essential school operations.

A Commitment to Sustainable Community Development

At Betterline Water, our commitment goes beyond business—we are dedicated to making a real difference in the communities we serve. Through projects like these, we aim to promote sustainable water solutions while also supporting education and community health. The borehole drilling and solar-powered pump installation at St. Mark’s Katheka is a testament to our belief in using innovative technology to improve lives.

“We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” —Mother Teresa. This quote continues to inspire our work as we strive to make a lasting positive impact through every project we undertake.

Task

One of the key challenges we faced while working on the St. Mark's Katheka project was the geological complexity of the site. Kitui County is known for its arid and rocky terrain, which often complicates borehole drilling efforts. Identifying a suitable location for the borehole required a thorough hydrogeological survey to ensure that we could access groundwater at the right depth. Additionally, we had to ensure that the equipment used could handle the rocky subsurface conditions without compromising the integrity of the drilling process. Moreover, logistics were a challenge due to the remoteness of the site. Transporting drilling equipment and solar pump systems to Kitui, especially during certain seasons, posed difficulties in terms of road access and timing. Our team had to carefully coordinate each stage of the project to ensure everything was delivered and installed on time, without delays to the school’s schedule. By overcoming these challenges, we were able to successfully deliver a fully operational solar-powered borehole pump, ensuring that St. Mark's Katheka School now has a reliable, sustainable water supply.
